Creatures of the Shattered Planes
This section is a bit unique, so bear with me.
Unlike the others, this is an ongoing project with a variety of concept work. I don’t want my portfolio to be exclusively concept work at the moment, but given that these pieces are all part of the same series they have been compiled here for your pleasure. Please enjoy!
The Grinning Gape
Sometimes, when you’re trying to improvise a story in a game, you just pull out whatever you can to make something interesting. Giant snake is a pretty well-trodden territory, right? What can I do with that?
“Uuuuuuh give it a bunch of eyes. Like a LOT of eyes. Also make its mouth just go down the whole body. Yeah, that’ll do it.
Wait we need more detail uhm okay it opens its mouth and you see babies! Baby snakes! Inside the mouth! Yeah that’ll do it…”
And so the Grinning Gape was born.
The Crawling Smokestack
Sometimes I like to just make messed up little guys. Or, in this case, a messed up big guy. Some horrible creature with no eyes, devouring everything in its path but specifically sand that it filters and bellows out of big smokestacks on its back…
It’s well worn, I think, but was fun to make all the same.
The Mega-Beaver
The Mega-Beaver started primarily as a joke- in a Dungeons and Dragons campaign my friends and I created a religion based around the existence of an extremely large river. We joked about how the fictional church would react if there were massive beavers trying to dam up the river (out of no ill intent, as they are beavers).
So, the Mega-Beaver was born, and with it the feud between the Church of the River and the Mega Beavers.
The Norahn Brush-Butcher
This one started with the concept to the right, actually. I don’t remember why I’d decided to create a small predatory animal, but I do remember getting excited at the idea of an animal that would hunt by using a big bush as a disguise. I’ve found that I really enjoy taking silly ideas (like stealth-game style camouflage) and executing them in a completely serious and genuine way. This was the first of these pieces I made so I was still trying to figure out the format (still am, to be honest!) but I’m quite happy with the design overall!
